Tales Of Haunted Hollywood Part I

Tales Of Haunted Hollywood Part I Image
With Halloween growing near, it's a good time for a ghost stories. My brother and I were trading ghost stories when he recalled something he'd seen on TV as a child. There were no History, Travel or Syfy channels in the late 60s, but the program was definitely a documentary. It featured haunted houses and the people who lived in them. One of the interviews was with German-born actress, Elke Sommer, who played opposite Peter Sellers in a Pink Panther movie called "A Shot in the Dark".

Elke Sommer and her husband, Hollywood columnist Joe Hyams, lived in Benedict Canyon in North Beverly Hills, California. They claimed that a ghost was living in their house. I can remember feeling spooked after watching this program. Sommer and her husband reported that they had a ghost in their dining room. The chairs would move around at night. Marks were put on the floor below the chairs before they went to bed, and in the morning the chairs wouldn't be standing on the marks anymore. The chairs would be all over the place.

In the middle of the night, Sommer and her husband would wake up to what sounded like a dinner party going on downstairs in the dining room. They heard voices, chairs scooting, glasses tinkling, and silverware clanging. Yet when they would venture downstairs, no one was there. Sommer said, "Things would move all the time and it would be very noisy and the usual poltergeist nonsense, you know." The ghost was described as being a middle-aged man wearing a white shirt.

After attempting to battle the spirits themselves with no relief, Sommer called in some help, contacting the Parapsychological Institute at UCLA. When Life photographer Allan Grant arrived at the house to take some pictures, he was a skeptic - but not so when he left. He said:

"Something happened that spooked me. On one roll of film that I shot in a particular room where they first spotted the ghost there were about four or five frames of film that were progressively fogged down to the end of the frame, giving it a ghostlike appearance, especially (of) Joe Hyams, who was in the shot. When that was processed and I took a look at it, I thought, there's no way that would happen...in the center of a roll...something else had happened that I couldn't explain and I've spent years as a photographer and that had never happened to me before....Something did happen in that house. "

The haunting continued. One night, awakened by a knocking on their bedroom door, Hyams opened the door to discover that a mysterious fire had broken out. He and Sommer managed to escape through a window. Shortly thereafter, they moved out of the house permanently. Hyams wrote a book about the haunting experience called "The Day I Gave Up the Ghost. "Evidently, though, the ghost didn't give up. The "severely haunted house" at 2633 Benedict Canyon was bought and sold more than seventeen times since Sommers vacated it, and many have reported ghostly phenomena.

Oddly enough, this ghost story made it to the pages of a 1965 and 1966 Jehovah's Witness publications, "AWAKE!" and "THE WATCHTOWER". Yet to be found, are the results of the investigation conducted by UCLA.

Ghost Hunters Returns

Ghost Hunters Returns Image
Ghost Hunters returns with another season tomorrow night at 9/8 C on SciFi.

"The new season kicks off with a harrowing investigation of the legendary Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia, once the site of bloody battles in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Today, both visitors and employees of the Fort tell chilling tales of their brushes with the afterlife.

Some claim to have seen apparitions of soldiers, while others report hearing a woman's terrified scream coming from an empty room. Now, the TAPS team has the opportunity to conduct the first investigation into newly discovered Casemate 11, an underground holding cell for those condemned to hang. There, Jason and Grant experience a bizarre series of events and uncover some of the shows most compelling paranormal evidence to date."

Family Ghost Story From The 1940s

Family Ghost Story From The 1940s Image
Posted: February 17, 2008

Hi Brian, I will send you a separate email so you know who this story is coming from.

I noticed your category for ghost stories and thought I'd add a bit to your collection. However please be forewarned, it is not dramatic. No chains or moaning! More like just an unusual family member.

My family has always had ghosts. As a young boy living in Vancouver and Alert Bay my father sometimes saw people who were not there and my mother once watched a group of people disappear right in front of her. She was 15 years old and walking down a street near her home in Vancouver. Coming towards her on the sidewalk but on the next block, was a group of about a dozen people. The first thing she noticed was their odd clothing, very old fashioned. She then realized that although they appeared to be talking and laughing there was no sound of voices or of feet on the sidewalk. They reached the corner of their block and turned down the side street just before my mother reached the end of her block. She looked around the corner and although they should have been just a short distance away there was no sign of them. For people who live in Vancouver this was in the Kits area around 4th and happened about 1930.

When my parents married in Prince George in 1942 they built a house near the south side of Connought Hill. In those days that was quite far out of town and very quiet, particularly at night. During the winter of 1943 the ghost arrived.

It announced its arrival by walking up the steps to the front door shortly after my parents went to bed. They could hear the footsteps squeaking in the dry snow as it came up the stairs right outside the bedroom window. No matter how quickly they jumped out of bed and looked out the window they saw nothing unusual. However within 10 minutes of going back to bed a hazy white light about four feet tall would drift past the bedroom door. It never seemed to do any harm and they eventually got used to it. In the summer they never heard it arrive but one of them would notice it go by and calmly comment that the ghost was back. Mom used to wish there was some way of getting it to do housework if it was going to be wandering around all night! Three years later we moved to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia and dad built another house that we lived in for 12 years. Sure enough, before long the ghost was again drifting through the hallways. Then for several years it was gone until one night I awoke to see it float past my bedroom door. The next morning my mom was a bit excited. Before I could say anything about the ghost she said "Guess what? The ghost is back and this time I saw it take a shape!" She had woken up to see a white hand and arm reaching towards the bedside lamp. Thinking it was my dad she reached out and turned on the light. Of course there was no one there and my dad was deep asleep.

We then moved to Victoria and this time we rented a house instead of building one. It took the ghost about six months to join us. Over the years my parents rented four more houses before buying the one I live in now. Yes, the ghost went with us to every one of them. It was never more than just a white haze until the late 1960's. Then it took on a very familiar shape. One afternoon my parents were sitting in the living room when Timmy, our Border Collie, walked through the room and down a hallway toward the bedrooms. As he went by he gave them a rather unusual look. A few minutes later they heard him barking. He was outside and wanted in. He never had been in the house and walking through the room. No, there were no open windows or doors. My parents checked! The ghost was changing and not always for the better! A few months later my parents were again in the living room when they heard a loud crash in the kitchen. They found that a big bottle of wood stain that was normally at the back of one of the upper kitchen cabinets had somehow come out of the cupboard (the door was still closed) the lid removed and placed on the counter and the bottle thrown against the opposite wall. However, as that was the worst damage that it ever did, we all just accepted that it was there and pretty well ignored it.

Just as an aside, around this time my parents saw two people disappear on the sidewalk outside the house. One afternoon they happened to notice four people walking along the sidewalk, two women in front and two men very close behind them. They were dressed in oddly old fashioned clothes and were bunched so close together that mom and dad thought the men would be stepping on the ladies dresses. For a very brief moment they were out of sight as a tree blocked part of the view from the house. All four went behind the tree and only the two women came out. The tree was near the house, nowhere near the people. The women did not appear to notice the men were gone. There was nowhere the men could have gone and dad even went outside to look. Nothing.

Many years later my younger brother was visiting our house with his wife and baby. I was married no longer living there. They were staying in the bedroom across the hall from my parents. During the night my mother suddenly awoke. A few minutes later the baby started to scream. Just as my brother got up in the dark to see to the baby, a basketball sized ball of light shot down the hallway. Immediately the baby stopped crying. Everyone was so startled they all got up and went into the living room. There, even with the lights on, they saw a couple of smaller balls of light bouncing near the ceiling in the corner of the room. It was very brief and then they were gone.

As the years went by the appearance changed. My mom died and dad still lives with us in the house. He and I have both seen a new shape. This one is shaped like a very narrow black hockey stick (not my idea of a ghost at all!) and darts around very quickly. I saw it first on Christmas Eve in 1992 but never mentioned it. A few days later my dad told of an odd black shape he'd seen darting through the house. the description matched exactly what I had seen. Other than changing size from tall to very short it doesn't really do very much except run around.

As I said at the beginning, our ghost is not dramatic, thank goodness! I would not be surprised if lots of people have similar "beings" but don't even really notice. However there were some rather strange, unsettling and dramatic events that took place during this time. One ghost (or angel?) even saved my life. Right now is not the time to go into it all but if you'd like I'd be happy to give you the details at a later date. Closer to Halloween perhaps! Now, in spite of the fact that I say the ghost didn't really frighten us, it is getting late, I am home alone and there is no light in the house except from the computer screen. I think I'd best stop for now before I start to hear strange noises ! I'm not quite as brave as I like to think I am.

Thank you to the person for the wonderful Ghost experiences.

Haunted Mansion

Haunted Mansion Image
In an old part of Cincinnati, Ohio, there sits a Victorian mansion built around 1850 with a history of paranormal activity.

The Stenton House, as it is called, was a private residence at first later turning into a school for girls in 1900, and finally became subdivided into apartments post WWII. It was when the home was a private residence to the Henry Family, that their son committed suicide inside the home by shooting himself. Also, it is known that a girl from the school hanged herself in one of the upstairs rooms. This has led many to believe is the cause for all the ghostly activity that has been going on over the years.

When the Stenton Family occupied the largest of the apartments, they were woken up every night at the same time, 2:10a.m., to the sound of something very heavy hitting the marble floor. Each time, the family was never able to find the cause of this disturbance. The family also heard disembodied voices regularly along with footsteps which, at times, seemed to follow them around. One winter morning, Mrs. Stenton saw a fresh set of footprints in the snow leading away from her property.

Other tenants have reported the same phenomena over the years and the place is believed to still be haunted today.

Silver Cliff Ghost Lights

Silver Cliff Ghost Lights Image
Another well known place to paranormal researchers the Silver Cliff Cemetery in Colorado. Ghost lights can be seen dancing around the tombstones in this cemetery at night. Witnesses say that the lights often appear a bluish white in color, in groups of 3 or four and quickly disappear when approached.

The town of Silver Creek was a mining hot spot in the late 1800's. The first reported sighting of the 'ghost lights' took place in 1880 by a group of miners traveling past the cemetery one evening. Scared by what they saw, they continued on their way. Since then, the lights have been seen on a regular basis.

Skeptics say that the lights come from the surrounding buildings and homes in the small town. To disprove this theory, everyone came together in the town and shut off all sources of light surrounding the cemetery including the street lights. The ghost lights were still seen dancing around the cemetery that night. Another suggestion as to the source of the lights was the possibility of radioactive ore in the area. Geiger counters were brought in and combed the area. No radioactivity was detected. Could these lights be the souls of the miners who lost their lives and continue to search for the gold they never found?

Ghost Of John Lennon

Ghost Of John Lennon Image
The ghost of murdered Beatle John Lennon has been seen on a number of occasions by various people close to him, including former band mate Paul McCartney. Paul claims that when he, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr sang Lennon's song, "Free As A Bird" in 1995, John's presence was actually there in the studio.

"There were a lot of strange goings-on in the studio - noises that shouldn't have been there and equipment doing all manner of weird things," McCartney said. "There was just an overall feeling that John was around."

In another paranormal experience, McCartney said that when he and the two other "Beatles" had a photo shoot for the album, a white peacock came wandering over from a nearby farm. At the very last minute, the beautiful bird made its presence known, and McCartney received the strong feeling that it was the spirit of John Lennon hovering around them as they completed the recording.

McCartney said to the other two ex-Beatles: "That's John. Spooky, eh? It was like John was hanging around. We felt that all through the recording."

When Paul McCartney listened to the single's B-side, he believed that John was making his presence known there, too.

McCartney said, "We put one of those spoof backwards recordings on the end of the single for a laugh, to give all those Beatles nuts something to do. I think it was the line of a George Formby song. Then we were listening to the finished single in the studio one night, and it gets to the end, and it goes, 'zzzwrk nggggwaaahhh jooohn lennnnnon qwwwrk.' I swear to God."

Paul said of he, George, and Ringo: "We were like, 'It's John. He likes it!"

Though this ghost story comes from someone who never knew Lennon personally, this is quite an eerie one to read.

John Lennon was gunned down by crazed fan Mark Chapman on December 8, 1980 in front of the Dakota, a New York apartment. Joey Harrow, a musician who lives near the Dakota, experienced a ghostly sighting of John in 1983. Harrow claimed he saw John's ghost at the Dakota front doorway, where he'd been shot three years before. Harrow claimed that the Lennon apparition was surrounded by an "eerie light."

When Joey Harrow witnessed the sighting, so did the writer, Amanda Moores. She was present at the time Lennon's ghost was sighted. Amanda said that she wanted to approach the figure of Lennon and talk to him, but was dissuaded from doing so by the rather serious expression on the apparition's face that seemed to say, "No, don't come near me."

Liam Gallagher, of the pop group Oasis, claimed he was once visited by the spirit of John Lennon. He didn't know Lennon in real life, but held great admiration for the Beatle. When Liam stayed at friend's house years ago in Manchester, England, he felt the strong presence of his hero.

The singer said, "I was in Manchester at a mate's house having a sleep. I remember getting up and feeling really weird. I turned round and there I was, lying on the bed, and I sort of fell back into my body. There was a presence there and it was him, Lennon."

The psychic Shawn Robbins said she saw John's ghost in the Dakota building, and Yoko Ono herself was reported to have seen John sitting at his white piano. He turned to her and said, "Don't be afraid. I am still with you."

According to several Spiritualists, John's spirit lingered on Earth for a short time before a group of spirit Guides helped him to adjust to the 'other' world. A person who won't 'let go' after they are dead becomes a ghost who haunts the area of the tragedy. The Guides convinced him to join them in the spirit world and various mediums began receiving messages from him.

John's ex-wife, Cynthia, found a dead jackdaw wrapped in old newspapers dated 1956 behind the fireplace of her home in Cumbria. She told journalist Annette Witheridge: "John told Julian that if there was life after death, he would prove it by sending a feather as a sign. When Julian saw the jackdaw, he was really shaken. It's as if John is trying to get in touch with us."

Short Description Of Ghosts And Poltergeists

Short Description Of Ghosts And Poltergeists Image
Below i am giving you a short description of Ghosts, Poltergeists, Haunted Places

Though ghost sightings and ghost pictures are often dismissed by scientists, ghost stories date back thousands of years and span numerous cultures. In fact, one of the first documented ghost sightings occurred in Athens, Greece, around 50 A.D.

Ghost sightings have also been documented in religious texts. For instance, the Bible and the Hebrew Torah both contain references to ghosts.

In this section, we'll discuss ghosts. We'll take an in-depth look at haunted houses, apparitions and poltergeists. Our articles will also examine the history of ghosts and provide information on ghost skeptics.

Haunted Houses

When ghosts are said to inhabit houses, the houses are referred to as haunted houses. Always popular attractions during Halloween celebrations, haunted houses are considered by many to be real and potentially threatening.

Some believers in the paranormal content that apparitions can often be seen in locations that they frequented when they were alive. Thus, it would make sense that a ghost would choose to visit his former home. Often, such tragic events as murders and suicides have occurred in haunted houses. Accidental deaths have also been associated with haunted houses.

Unexplained incidents, such as the unaided movement of objects or the slamming of doors, are often said to occur in haunted houses. Some of the scariest ghost pictures are also taken in haunted houses.

The house located at 112 Ocean Ave. in Amityville, New York, is one of the many famous haunted houses.

Apparitions

To many people, a ghost and an apparition are the same thing. However, for others, the term "ghost" refers to a disembodied soul, which may be revealed as a mist or a cloud, while the term "apparition" refers to a supernatural spirit that most often appears in human form.

Thus, an apparition of a deceased person will likely look much like the person did when he was alive.

Interestingly, though many people associate apparitions with the deceased, apparitions may also take the form of people who are still currently living.

Poltergeist

When people hear the term "poltergeist," many immediately think of the scary movie trilogy of the same name. However, the word "poltergeist" refers to a spirit that is generally mischievous and occasionally malicious.

The word, which comes from the German words "poltern" (to knock) and "geist" (spirit), refers to the spirits' tendency to make noise. Poltergeist activity often includes throwing and moving objects.

Essentially, a haunted house is a place in which ghost sightings or ghost activities have been reported. Ghost activity includes an extremely wide range of paranormal events, from noises such as speaking, screaming and footsteps to poltergeist activity during which doors slam shut, objects move and people think they see ghosts.

For a house or building to gain a reputation for being haunted, all it requires are tales of ghostly goings-on. In fact, a haunted house rarely receives any scientific corroboration. Like urban myths, haunted house legends are typically spread through tales and stories told from one person to another.

Famous Haunted Houses in the U.S.

Athens, Ohio has been called one of the most haunted towns in the world by the British Physical Society. Athens boasts a vast number of ghost stories. There are five cemeteries in Athens, and, when connected by a line, they form a pentagon (an occult symbol representing magic and power) with Ohio University in its center.

Ohio University itself is reportedly one of the most haunted college campuses in the United States. The University owns most of the land around the building that used to be the state hospital, a building with many ghost accounts. Athens is said to be a haven for Satanists and occult followers. In the 1850s, the town was home to a large number of spiritualists.

Haunted Andleberry Estate

One of the more famous haunted houses in pop culture is the Andleberry Estate, in Clovis, California. This mansion is reportedly haunted by residents of the sanitarium, of which the mansion used to be a part. The owner says he has heard ghost activity and has felt ghosts breathing on him.

Many different groups, including paranormal investigators, LiveSciFi.TV and a local news station have all visited the mansion. In total, paranormal investigators at the site have recorded:

* doors that slam by themselves

* electronic voice phenomenon (EVP), a paranormal event recorded by some form of electronic media, like a tape recorder

* over 22 different spirits.

For many people, EVPs are proof that ghost activity is real and not fabricated legend.

Haunted Everything Else

Alcatraz, located on an island in San Francisco Bay, no longer operates as a maximum-security prison but is open to visitors interested in its history. Many visitors report hearing screams, cell doors slamming, footsteps and other ghostly activity.

Hotel Chelsea, in Manhattan, is one of New York's more infamous landmarks due to its rich history of deaths and reports of ghost activity. Guests tell tales of seeing the ghost of Sex Pistols band member, Sid Vicious, in the elevator. Sid was suspected of brutally murdering his girlfriend in the hotel and later died of a heroin overdose.

Sid's friend, Dee Dee Ramone, recounts a feeling of unease in the hotel after Sid's death. Other Hotel Chelsea ghosts include the writer Thomas Wolfe and poet Dylan Thomas. One wonders how they get on with Sid.

Visiting Haunted Houses

A number of different Web sites list the details and locations of supposedly haunted houses (and haunted everything else, for that matter). Those interested in haunted houses across the United States and throughout the world can see haunted house pictures on the Internet. The Internet provides a great alternative to the high expense of traveling to different sites. And, it just might be safer too.

Michael Jackson Ghost Allegedly Haunting Neighbors

Michael Jackson Ghost Allegedly Haunting Neighbors Image
Michael Jackson may have passed away three years ago, but some of his former neighbors claim that the King of Pop's spirit still lives on.

Jackson, 50-year-old pop star who was pronounced dead on June 25, 2009 after an overdose on the surgical anesthetic propofol, has reportedly been scaring neighbors of his former Beverly Hills mansion. A source recently told the Daily Star that neighbors have heard the pop star's music recently along with his singing.

"It has freaked everyone out. When he was living there, Michael would regularly look through the curtains and see who was around," the source said. "People have heard his music coming from the house and even singing. Everyone thinks that Michael's ghost walks around the house."

One neighbor reportedly told the publication that Jackson took an interest in the afterlife, which may explain the return of his spirit.

"It is so weird. The world knew that Michael was obsessed by the afterlife, from his songs like Thriller," the neighbor said. "He believed in spirits - now his own has returned."

Although no members of Jackson's family have confirmed any belief of the pop star's spirit haunting his former mansion, many people celebrated his life on Monday by taking time to tweet about his memory.

"Three years ago today the world lost a legend. RIP Michael Jackson," rapper Wiz Khalifa tweeted. "Your music lives on for you. Thank you for everything!"

Spike Lee, film director, producer and actor, also tweeted his condolences to the late singer.

"On this day, June 25, in the year of our Lord 2009 Michael Jackson left us in his physical state," Lee tweeted. "May the almighty continue to bless him."

Paris Jackson, 14-year-old daughter of the late singer, also joined in on the "RIP Michael Jackson" Twitter trend that took place on the three-year anniversary of the singer's death.

"Dad you will forever be in my heart," the young Jackson tweeted. "I love you." - christianpost
