Ghost Children

Ghost Children Image
A ghost of child is a difficult one for me. A mother myself, I cannot bear to think that a helpless child is lost, searching for his or her parents and unaware of their passing.

In the documentary film Children Of The Grave, viewers are faced with the reality of ghost children and the awful events that brought them to be. Hearing EVPs of their laughter, cries and tiny voices clearly communicating with the living brought tears to my eyes after sending an icy cold shiver up my spine. Filmmakers, along with the investigators who worked on this documentary were professional and showed compassion/respect for each of the innocent, lost souls that they encountered along their journey.

Another haunted location that comes to my mind is Whispers Estate - a B&B in my home state that is believed to be home to ghosts of children. Reported paranormal activity, along with recorded sounds of a baby crying and children talking, have led the owner and visitors to believe in and accept the existence of ghosts. Paranormal investigator Keith Age, from the Louisville Ghost Hunting Society, has said that this is one of the most active places he has been to and one where the ghosts clearly respond to the questions being asked.

~I would hope that in cases where the child ghost is accompanied by a malevolent entity or needs help in getting to the "other side", those involved would do their best to help release them from whatever keeps them earthbound.

Ghostly Encounters Can Be All Too Real Should You Be Afraid

Ghostly Encounters Can Be All Too Real Should You Be Afraid Image
Ghostly figures, shadows, ghostly lights, pained and twisted voices, sounds, and other phenomenon are common occurrences during a ghostly encounter. Ghosts are thought to be the spirits of deceased humans either trapped on this earth for what ever reason you choose to believe, or still attached to the earthly realm due to some unfulfilled earthly desire or desires.

A commonly accepted definition of a ghost is "the soul of a dead person, a disembodied spirit imagined, usually as a vague, shadowy or evanescent form, as wandering among or haunting living persons.

Many people believe that ghostly activity is around us every day, but we just do not see it. Some people have more ghostly encounters than others and the reason why is because they are either consciously more open to the finer realms or simply naturally endowed with the ability to see them. Those with a natural ability commonly have other psychic powers at their disposal. There are a fortunate few who can turn that power on and off at will.

Real ghosts often appear in different forms. Those that have had a haunting or encounter report anything from a solid looking form, a shadow, or a transparent smoky or misty mass of a full body apparition. Sometimes it is just the head or upper torso. Ghosts can be perceived by the living in a number of ways: through sight, sounds and voices, smells, occasionally touch, and often they are merely sensed.

Ghostly encounters often have one thing in common; a chilling or cold sensation on the skin, however it is important to remember that a natural response to fear is your hair raising up on the back of the neck or arms and this can be mistaken for the chill thought to be caused by an unseen entity.

One of the most important and yet inexpensive devices for catching evidence of a ghost is a digital thermometer. It is believed that an entity trying to manifest itself in some way sucks the energy out of the surrounding location, thus dropping the air temperature. If you or someone you know is having frequent bouts of these type of chilling sensations then by all means invest in a thermometer to test out whether the situation is real or imagined.

The reason most people get scared when they have a ghostly encounter is that the fear they feel is a natural response to the unknown. Rare are the cases of a ghost or spirit causing harm to a human being. They just don't have the power or desire to harm anybody. If you are having ghostly encounters and are afraid, ask yourself, what do I have to fear?

If yours is in fact one of those extremely rare cases where a spirit is causing bodily or mental harm by all means call a priest or a psychic who is studied in handling these type of things. They will guide you in the proper management of your situation. Paranormal activity can sometimes be frightening, but one should not fear ghosts. Ghosts should be studied with the thought of learning more about what happens to some souls upon physical death. With this knowledge it may then be possible to help the disembodied being move on to their proper place in the astral realm.

The consciousness of a human can get very attached to a specific location while living. It is thought that the spirit of that person may remain at that location for some time after physical death due to the personal feelings and desires of the individual. In most cases it seems they do move on after a number of years. It is during this time that the living sometimes have a run in with them.

It does not seem to be that a ghost really cares who is living in their location as long as the atmosphere is relatively calm without a lot of anger or other negative emotions generated by the current inhabitants. Often times ghostly encounters are reported after starting a remodeling project of the home. This activity somehow seems to disturb them, but once the project is complete the encounters generally die down.

Choosing A Digital Voice Recorder To Capture Ghost Sounds

Choosing A Digital Voice Recorder To Capture Ghost Sounds Image
Becoming a ghost hunter is considered to be one of the most popular hobbies in today's world. If you are interested in conducting a ghost study in order to establish proof of ghosts, it is important that you know the steps on choosing a digital voice recorder to capture true ghost sounds. Most professional ghost investigators today elect to use this type of recording device for the simple fact that it has the capability to record a large amount of data and it is considered to be much more convenient that traditional recording systems that use standard tapes. In this guide, you will learn what features to look for when shopping for a digital recording device that will capture ghost sounds.

The first feature that you should pay close attention to when it comes to choosing a recording device that is digital in nature is the recording time that is part of the device. Most ghost investigations average anywhere between two hours and five hours in length. It is essential that you purchase a recorder that has the capability to record a minimum of two hours worth of sounds. Fortunately, the technological advancements associated with this piece of ghost hunting equipment have now allowed manufacturers of the units to integrate well over two hundred hours of recording time into the devices. If you are just starting the process of becoming a ghost hunter, this type of recording time will be perfect for you.

When you are looking to capture ghost sounds, it is important to choose a digital voice recorder that has many features associated with the actual recording process. When shopping for this piece of ghost hunting equipment, you will discover features such as voice activation, LCD display screens, fast forward features, rewind features, the integration of time and date, as well as a cut feature that will allow you to successfully omit any sounds that you do not want to include in your paranormal investigation evidence files. When becoming a ghost hunter, you will find that ghost hunting equipment features are essential to your overall success in gathering evidence that establishes proof of ghosts.

As you can see, there are many different considerations that should be made when purchasing a voice recorder for your ghost hunting investigations. By focusing on the features that are outlined in this guide, it is quite likely that you will be able to discover a product that is effective for the ghost study investigations that you conduct. There are inexpensive and expensive digital recorders on the market today. Before shopping for yours, it is important to also consider how much you would like to spend on the device. It is important to understand that price should never be a determining factor as far as the quality of a product is concerned - especially a digital voice recorder. It is much more effective to focus on the features and the way that the unit may assist you in capturing ghost sounds.

Ghost In The Window

Ghost In The Window Image
Hi - my name is Marie. When I was in the 6th grade we moved to a small town in Florida called Starke. I hated it the moment I came here and because of it I became lonely. During the next few years I began seeing supernatural things in the woods outside of our house. One instance in particular really shook me up. My room has two windows in the corner and it being Florida and extremely hot I had a window fan in one of them. One night I was lying awake in bed and I heard a strange voice call out my name. It was a female voice and she sounded like she was in great pain. I kind of dismissed it out of my mind and it seemed to go away until a few hours later.

I was sleeping by this time and having fitful dreams of a fire when out of the blue I heard the woman's voice again only this time louder. It was directly behind my fan. It scared me so bad I crawled into our living room and told my dad what I had heard. He went outside to check on it and when he came back he said there was nothing there and chalked it up to my imagination. I went back to bed shaking and shivering and I heard her again. This time she was screaming "My house is on fire. Please come help me Marie!" I started crying at this point and had my dad check outside yet again. Nothing. Well I went back to bed and I didn't hear anything the rest of the night. The next night I heard her again. This time she was screaming "My children, their on fire! Marie you have to help!" This went on for about 2 weeks.

One night my friend stayed the night with me. I figured that maybe I was dreaming all of this and I would be safe with someone there. My friend was sleeping by the fan (she didn't believe what I had heard) when all of the sudden she heard "Marie? Where is Marie? You are not her! Go away!" she was hurdling profane language at my friend! You see I had not told my friend about my "ghost" and she was so scared she shoved me next to the window and went to sleep. The last night before "she" left I saw her. Again I heard her screaming at my window and I had learned to block it out but this night was different. She was screaming "Look what they've done to me! LOOK!" I turned my head to the window and I saw her. She was a tall very skinny woman in a white old colonial style dress, her hair was on fire, and her eyes were coal black. She looked at me with a sad smile and was gone, never to be seen again.

A few years later I was old enough to do some research. Back in the 1830's a woman lived out where I am with her 2 children. She was having a love affair with a black man and her neighbors and some other men came out and burned her house with her and her children in it. It is only rumored but that explains a lot of what she had said to me and I honestly think she watches over me now since I found out the cause. - "forwarded by the witness"

Searching For The Ghost Riders At The Chisholm Trail Museum

Searching For The Ghost Riders At The Chisholm Trail Museum Image
DodgeCity - A second group of ghost hunters is taking a closer look at Wellington's Chisholm Trail Museum after they claim to have found evidence of paranormal activity.

Wichita League of Paranormal Investigators Jan Cohee of Wellington and Brendan Brannan converged on the museum, Friday night, setting up night vision cameras, voice recorders and electronic field radiation testers to see if their ghostly lightning might strike twice.

About a year ago, the group was in the museum and says they captured voices, thumps, heaving breathing and responses to questions.

"We had a lot of personal experiences," said Cohee. "When I was down in the basement, I had my camera in my lap and my legs crossed and it was picked up and put on the other side of my leg," said Cohee.

"We heard footsteps," said Brannan. "but it was kind of a cat and mouse game. You'd go in one room and hear it on the other end,"

The two investigators aren't the only ones who have felt something odd in the museum.

Patty Hatcher, a regular volunteer at the museum claims she saw a man appear in a doorway and then suddenly he was gone.

"I started to say hello and then he was gone - he was just like a tall gentleman," said Hatcher. "I can hear little footsteps upstairs,"

The two were hoping not only for sounds, but for more visual evidence of spirits in the museum.

As Cohee started her journey into the depths of the basement, she told of her first time in the museum's lowest level. Traveling to the right of the staircase, Cohee said she not only heard a ghost, but saw one.

"I turned to the right and I had seen something peek around this wall at me and then when I was walking up to it, I heard two taps and I was telling one of the other investigators to come here, that I had seen something around the corner at me and when I went back to listen to the recording, there was a 'help me'," said Cohee. "The tapping was a 'look here' and you can clearly hear the 'help me' - it was a white-looking mass - but you could see the facial features. You could see the eyes and nose, the mouth."

Feelings of electricity or soft touches are common, Cohee says, and she says she's experienced some before in the museum, but mostly the spirits come through audio capture.

Brannan related his story from last years hunt as he traveled to the third floor - the former surgical area of the former hospital - in search of ghosts. Near a room filled with old toys, the Wichita man said he got responses to a question asked in the dark.

"I said, is the fire truck your favorite toy, if it is could you please knock loudly twice and then there were two loud bangs in here," said Brannan. "I was just talking with the people downstairs and they said the guy that owned the santa suit (which is on display in the toy room) was a firefighter, so it's all coming together now,"

The two ghost hunters traveled in the darkened rooms, asking questions and waiting for responses, all as voice recorders and camera equipment rolled. The two still have to go over footage to make sure they didn't miss anything, but say more than likely that they will be back.

Museum volunteer Richard Gilfillan of Wellington has seen groups of ghost hunters come to the museum before, but says he wants solid answers.

"People are curious and so am I," said Gilfillan. "I want to see something, seriously. I want to see something concrete. I want solid evidence that they are here."

Night at the Chisholm Trail Museum

As the sky darkened and Wellington residents were settling in for the night Saturday, members of the Wichita Paranormal Research Society started work at the Chisholm Trail Museum readying themselves for a night of spirit searching.

The group was drawn to the museum for it's nearly 100 years of history - not only the building itself, but also for the articles inside it.

"It's got such interesting history that we decided to investigate and see if we find something paranormal there," said Investigator and Public Relations Manager Sherry Curry. The group investigates every Saturday and focuses on authenticating evidence and documenting the existence of any paranormal activity via audio, video and other electronic means of equipment.

President of the Chisholm Trail Museum Board of Directors Richard Gilfillan says the building is one of Wellington's treasures and he's not surprised the group took interest.

The building was erected in 1916 by Dr. A.R. Hatcher to house the Hatcher Hospital and Clinic. His son, Dr. A.C. Hatcher, also a doctor, joined the staff in 1949 and later took charge of the clinic after his father's retirement. Dr. A.R. Hatcher died at age 75 in 1960. Then four years later, Dr. A.C. Hatcher, only 46, walked into the hospital with chest pains and died. With no one to run the hospital, it eventually closed and became a museum, Gilfillan said.

The former hospital is now home to everything from military mementos and uniforms, to old hospital equipment, farming tools and even some prehistoric fossils and mammoth bones.

Having spent many hours in the museum taking groups through the history of the County, Gilfillan says he's had children say the place is haunted, though he doesn't quite believe it himself.

"I think it's just the mannequins...they are a little creepy," the former teacher said. Automatic lights also seem to frighten younger visitors as they blame the change on ghosts.

This isn't the first time the society has been to Sumner County, however.

A trip to the Oxford Mill resulted in some spooky results.

"All of a sudden they heard glasses clanging. They had slid and had clanged into each other," said Curry. A male voice was recorded saying, "Have a seat" when Curry and another investigator walked outside, while she and another were touched on the elbow, Curry said.

The group has even visited the old Oxford High School in an attempt to make contact with spirits that have been left behind.

"The old high school probably more so than any of them. Nothing happened while we were there but we got a ton of audio back," she said.

Elliott says there is a story of a student who died in a bus accident and on the audio, he says the society picked up a young girl's voice.

"We picked up the voice of a little girl and there was nobody in the building with us, not even the employees," Elliott said.

After infrared cameras were placed on every floor of the museum and the members got their personal equipment ready - the hunt was on as the group split into teams.

Curry and Bob Gilmer took the third floor, an add-on to the building that was used for operations. Climbing the stairs by the light of their flashlights, the two entered the pitch-black third floor and started work. The pair introduced themselves to any spirits in the room and then started to ask questions and make requests.

"We aren't here to hurt you, we just want to communicate," Curry said. "If you can see me, move towards my green light." The light on the electro-magnet meter picks up spikes in electro-magnetic currents, which some believe are caused by the paranormal.

Lori Dewinkler and Conway Springs native Donna Chaffin first took the basement and then moved to the first floor military room, calmly repeating questions and requests.

Board member Brian Ferguson and Gilfillan even got in on the act, with Ferguson going down in the basement with the society members and Gilfillan keeping a watchful eye on the infrared camera feeds.

Though the night seemed quiet, the investigators say there was more going on than meets the eye.

"It stayed quiet with the exception of three different incidents on the second and third floor. We had one person at the end of the hall and you would hear footsteps at the other end of the hall and there was nobody down there," Elliott said. "I was there one time and heard it myself. It definitely sounded like somebody was walking around at the end of the hallway and there was nobody around."

That's not the only thing the investigators found. While discussions were taking place in the basement, digital audio recorders were able to pick up sounds the society members couldn't hear.

"They were just talking and weren't really asking questions and you hear a voice in the background say, 'It's all right,'" Elliott said. Another incident occurred under similar circumstances, the investigator said, this time with whispers holding a conversation in the background.

Elliott says it's more common to pick up voices on the recorders than to pick up visuals on still or video camera.

"It happens all the time," he said.

The museum seems to be one of the more active spirit centers in the County.

"It looks like it's pretty on par with the Oxford Mill," Elliott said. "Regardless, it doesn't seem to care what anyone's doing, it just does it's own thing," he said of the spirit caught on the recorder.

More results may come in later as more members of the team go over their audio findings, Elliott said.

Though not a believer himself, Gilfillan says he hopes more people will visit as a result of the ghost hunt.

"Maybe this will bring some attention to the museum. A handful of us work down there for nothing and it's strictly to help and promote the town so anything that brings attention to it is welcome," he said.

Top Real Life Haunted Houses

Top Real Life Haunted Houses Image
Some people might be hesitant to admit that they believe in ghosts. But if you've ever heard a chilling bump in the night when you're home alone, ghosts might not be such a leap of faith. In fact, just over a third of American adults believe in ghosts. Perhaps more surprising is that 23 percent of adults polled said they'd personally seen or felt a ghost.

Every October, thousands of people pay to walk through commercial -haunted houses, in which costumed actors stand in for otherworldly spirits. Customers can get the adrenaline rush of scary "monsters" popping out at them for a few minutes without any risk of getting their souls stolen or becoming possessed. But real-life haunted houses are a different story. Sure, there are plenty of paranormal enthusiasts who intentionally stay in haunted hotels and hunt for ghosts. But what if ghosts found their way into your home? If the poll results mentioned above are accurate, these uninvited guests aren't such an uncommon occurrence.

According to the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena (ASSAP), there are some things to pay attention to if you suspect your house is haunted. You may have some brooding banshees or bothersome bogeymen on your hands if you experience the following: see apparitions, hear weird sounds, smell odd odors, feel "cold spots" within a room, notice objects that have been moved or observe your pet acting agitated. The five places on the following pages have certainly filled that bill, becoming the world's most notorious real-life haunted houses.

Twenty-three percent of American adults say they've seen a ghost or felt the presence of one

Whaley House

The Whaley House in San Diego was originally built on the execution grounds of James Robinson, nicknamed Yankee Jim. In 1852, Yankee Jim was convicted of grand larceny and sentenced to death by hanging. The hangman set the noose improperly, allowing Jim's feet to graze the ground, prolonging the hanging process. In 1856, Thomas Whaley bought the land where Yankee Jim had been killed and built a house for his own family. According to the youngest Whaley daughter, she could hear the sound of boots clomping through the house and suspected it to be the ghost of Yankee Jim.

Today, the Whaley House is a registered historic site and museum. Visitors and employees have reported seeing or hearing the ghosts of former owners Thomas and Anna Whaley. Thomas' ghost usually resides near the landing at the top of the staircase, while Anna's stays downstairs or in the garden. Television host Regis Philbin is among those who claimed to have seen Mrs. Whaley's ghost. Scents of cigar smoke and perfume have also mysteriously arisen at times. Because of the frequency of such ghost sightings, the Whaley House has been cited as one of the most haunted houses in the United States.

Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, Calif., is one of the spookiest haunted houses in the United States. For 38 years, proprietor Sarah Winchester ordered construction workers to work on the bizarre home that famously contains a stairway leading nowhere.

FACES OF BELMEZ

A small cottage in the southern Spanish province of Jaen, in the town of Belm'ez, isn't haunted by ghosts, per se. The house is built, however, on burial grounds dating back to 1830 [source: Schweimler]. Inside the kitchen, the floor contains an unsolved mystery that has puzzled scientists and laymen for decades. Maria Gom'ez Pereira, who lived in the house, discovered a face peering up at her from her kitchen floor in 1971. Instead of a two-dimensional apparition, the face resembled a plaster casting that seemed to rise from beneath the house, as though a head was buried right below it.

Spooked by the strange facade, Pereira and her neighbors attempted to get rid of it by chipping away the cement with an axe. Yet upon doing so, they revealed more face casts, this time of older men and children. As word spread about the so-called "faces of Belm'ez," scientists stepped in to verify their authenticity and test whether they were paintings or fake castings orchestrated by Pereira and her neighbors. The painting theory was ruled out, but no conclusive evidence exists to pinpoint exactly how the faces got there.

Cast faces, like this one of Oliver Cromwell, appeared in the flooring of a Spanish home.

Blickling Hall

In October 2007, the National Trust of England named Blickling Hall the most haunted home in the country. Located in Norfolk, England, the stately house is said to have a special guest stop by every spring.

Blickling Hall was one of Anne Boleyn's childhood homes. Boleyn was the second of King Henry VIII's six wives. Henry was obsessed with having a male heir to the throne and consequently divorced Catherine of Aragon, his first wife, because none of the males she gave birth to survived. He gave it another go with Anne Boleyn, who also failed to produce a son (but did give birth to the future Queen Elizabeth I). To arrange his second divorce, the king cooked up adultery charges against Boleyn that stuck. Her punishment of allegedly cheating on one of the world's most powerful men at that time was death.

On May 19, 1536, Anne Boleyn was beheaded. Every year, on the anniversary of her execution, Boleyn's headless ghost arrives at Blickling Hall in a carriage drawn by a headless horseman. But she hasn't lost her head completely in the afterlife -- she carries it along with her during her hauntings.

Every May 19, Anne Boleyn's headless ghost pays a visit to Blickling Hall.

ROSE HALL

The tales of the murderous Annie Palmer of Rose Hall still frighten children in Jamaica. Built in 1770, Rose Hall was a sugar cane plantation and home to Palmer and her husband. Palmer grew up in Haiti and learned voodoo from her nanny, which would later serve her in her dastardly schemes.

When Palmer became sexually unsatisfied with her husband, she began sleeping with slaves on the plantation. In order to keep them quiet about the affairs, she either killed these men or ordered other slaves to do so. Wanting to gain sole possession of her husband's wealth, she poisoned her first husband and later married and killed two other men. Her twisted sexual escapades continued as well. In case she encountered a man unwilling to pleasure her or a slave trying to escape, Palmer had a pit dug 16 feet (4.8 meters) below the house where she would banish these people. As her nefarious reputation spread around the island, she became known as the White Witch.

According to legend, Palmer cast a fatal voodoo hex on a housekeeper who caught the eye of one of her lovers. Supposedly, the housekeeper's grandfather later strangled Palmer to death. Her body was buried in an aboveground coffin in the eastern wing of Rose Hall. The White Witch's spirit, along with those of the slaves she had murdered, continued to haunt the house. When new tenants attempted to move into Rose Hall, they were quickly driven away from the haunted grounds. Eventually, in 1965, a couple bought the house and converted it into a museum. Yet even today, visitors and employees have reported hearing men's screams and doors slamming, as well as other paranormal phenomena.

Annie Palmer, known as the White Witch, lived in Jamaica's Rose Hall.

The White House

It must be hard for former presidential couples to adjust to life outside of the White House. After four or more years, they probably get used to never having to take out the trash, wash dishes or change a light bulb, not to mention the other amenities afforded to the most powerful people in the Western world. Perhaps that's why some have stuck around after their terms -- and lives -- ended. That's right, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is not only the most famous address in the United States, but also one of the most haunted.

John and Abigail Adams were the first presidential couple to live in the White House, taking residence in 1800. Abigail has lingered ever since, and her ghost is said to hang laundry in the East Room on occasion. Another first woman, Dolley Madison, has been quite territorial with White House renovations. During her husband's term, Dolley oversaw the landscaping of the Rose Garden, where presidents often meet with the media. When President Woodrow Wilson's wife tried to have the garden dug up, the story goes that Dolley's ghost appeared and instructed the workers not to tear up her beloved garden.

Going along with a rose theme, the Queen's Bedroom, which was once called the Rose Room, is known as a paranormal hotspot in the White House. It not only houses the bed of President Andrew Jackson but his ghost as well, which has been heard walking around the room. Jackson's ghost is rumored to hang out in the Red Room as well. People have seen Abraham Lincoln's ghost ambling down the halls and staring out of windows. He pays visits to the Lincoln bedroom at times as well.

Don't believe us? The White House Web site has a page devoted to its ghost sightings, once spotted by notable residents like Eleanor Roosevelt and Jimmy Carter's daughter.

Abraham Lincoln's ghost still hangs around the White House, particularly in the Lincoln bedroom.

Our Haunted Seas

Our Haunted Seas Image
Hardship will drive people to do the unthinkable, and in the early 21st century, some examples of the human drive to flee from hardship are to be found in the endless South to North migration of the oppressed, both in the New and Old Worlds. In August 2004, a newspaper report filed by Joaqu'in Asenci'on of the El Vocero newspaper highlighted the harrowing, nightmarish experience of nearly forty castaways who had chanced the caprice of the ocean waves for a better chance at a life in neighboring Puerto Rico. A total of eighty-two "boat people" - men, women and children - departed in a rickety boat from the Dominican Republic for what should have been a very short crossing of the unpredictable Mona Passage to a secret landing site somewhere in western Puerto Rico.

But the ocean had a cruel fate in store for the refugees: their precariously outfitted craft, improperly stocked with food and water, was swept out into the Atlantic for a twelve-day odyssey that not even the bravest Hollywood director would try to capture on film. Hunger and thirst raged among the passengers, causing many to jump into the sea to drink in as much salt water as possible before dying; some survivors later reported acts of cannibalism had taken place in the drifting vessel, but the most astonishing - and terrifying- event was yet in store.

One survivor told the journalist reporting the story that while the refugees fought for survival among the wind, waves and merciless sun, a "monster" with vast wings appeared before them. Overcome by dread, passengers huddled together to read from a New Testament that had been found in the vessel, but as they read from the holy book, its pages inexplicably vanished their hands.

Only thirty-seven out of the eighty passengers survived the ordeal, eventually being found by fishermen from the Dominican town of Nagua.

What was the strange winged monster? A Mothman-type creature? A supernatural entity emerged from the roiling sea to mock the passengers, or indeed to try their faith? There can be no doubt that spending almost two weeks at sea without food and water can lead to hallucinations, especially when witnessing hellish conditions among one's fellows, but such tricks of the mind would more than likely summon thoughts of food, safety and shelter, not stygian specters. Would a collective hallucination also include the disappearance of pages from a religious text? A question best left to mental health experts. It is known that certain elemental figures tend to adopt physical manifestations, and conditions and situations that have plagued humanity from the start - war, disease, insanity - may have elementals that embody these odious scourges. Could we speculate that the despairing castaways were witnesses to a manifestation of the elemental of hunger?

It is also true that certain waters appear to be "haunted": the so-called Horse Latitudes of the Atlantic Ocean were named thus after ghosts of horses supposedly dumped overboard by early mariners when ships were becalmed and water ran short; Vincent Gaddis's classic Invisible Horizons (NY: Ace, 1965) mentions a rather dreadful apparition known as "Ladylips", the jawless phantom of a French sea captain, that haunts the waters of the Pacific Ocean and has reportedly been seen by over 500 sailors aboard American and British vessels. Nor should we ever forget the exorcisms performed by the late Reverend Donald Omand over certain bodies of water in Norway (the ominous-sounding Fjord of the Trolls) and the Arctic Ocean that were prone to manifestations of sea serpents and caused mariners to perform irrational acts. And speaking of sea monsters...

AN ARGENTINEAN SEA SERPENT

Guillermo R. Gim'enez, a contributing editor to the INEXPLICATA journal, is one of Argentina's most dynamic researchers - an author, indefatigable traveler and meticulous analyst of matters paranormal - who has the great fortune to live in one of his country's loveliest locations, the seaside resort of Necochea, a paradise for the beachcomber and the marine sportsman alike. Since 1994, he reports, the littoral of Necochea and Quequ'en has been visited by sort of creature best described as a "sea serpent" - dubbed Joselito -- that was initially reported by Carlos Mi~no, master of the Paco Ventura, a commercial fishing vessel out of Quequ'en. The sighting took place between March 18 some six miles out at sea. According to Gim'enez, the crew radioed their base at Mar del Plata that at 13:00 hours on that day they had seen the monster: "[measuring] some 10 to 12 meters long from head to back, which was all that could be seen...the remainder [of the creature] remained submerged." This marine nightmare was only a scant 10 meters away from the Paco Ventura when the sighting occurred, while the crew was dragging its nets. Further sightings occurred, reported by commercial and recreational fishermen, but just as many preferred to keep their sightings to themselves.

Carlos Mi~no, the Ventura's owner, told Necochea's Ecos Diarios newspaper that at no time did he feel his ship or crew were at danger. "It appears to be a peaceful specimen. At no time did it threaten us, and I could go as far as to say that it ignored us...I was the first one to see it, although I had no idea what it could be. It called my attention because this dark thing appeared on the water and seagulls suddenly surrounded it. I headed for the ship's bow, intrigued. After a while it submerged, and then remained floating, which allowed me to take a better look."

"Part of its back," continues Mi~no's description, had [something like] serrated or staggered fins." He described these appendages as being similar to "the dinosaurs they show us in books or magazines." The creature's head was described as white and rounded, like that of a duck. "I was unable to calculate its full size since I didn't see the whole animal. It gave the impression of being much larger than what was visible, but I couldn't calculate it."

Amid all the commotion over the Necochea sea serpent, a man named Luis Menna recalled that a year earlier, another man had reported seeing two such sea serpents while camped out near M'edano Blanco. He reportedly heard "strange sounds or noises" coming from the shallow waters near the coast.

Further corroboration for Carlos Mi~no's sighting came from Mar'ia S. Monterrosa and Osvaldo Guti'errez, a pair of housekeepers who were looking after summer homes in the vicinity of Bah'ia de los Vientos. Only a two weeks earlier, they had witnessed a strange marine creature some 15 meters from the coast. "We have seen whales, baby whales, sea lions, penguins and other species, but we had never seen an animal with these characteristics. It had a large head, a serrated back and large eyes. At least three or four meters of the creature's back could be seen on the surface."

Could these creatures have emerged from very deep oceanic waters as a result of naval exercises, oil drilling on the Argentinean continental shelf or other man-made activity? Or did they simply come to shallower waters to spawn? One wonders if sightings of such large sea creatures in antiquity were the source of the Babylonian myth of Tiamat, the evil "dragon" that is the source of all sea monsters. Certainly they could embody the Biblical notions of Rahab or Leviathan, as conveyed in the Psalms: "This great and wide sea, in which are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great. There the ships sail about; there is the Leviathan which you have made to play there." (Ps 104:25-26). Antedating the Scriptures by centuries we find inscriptions and amulets designed to ward off these unwelcome marine presences, such as this one: "Seven are they...In the Ocean Deep, Seven are they...Neither male nor female are they...The Evil Ones of Ea, throne bearers of the gods are they..." (Thompson, Devils and Evil Spirits of Babylonia).

MYSTERIOUS GOLFO DE SAN JORGE

The fact remains that Argentina's coastal waters have witnessed many strange activity, but the country's Golfo de San Jorge can safely claim precedence among them all. Not only was it notorious in the 1960's for a number of USO (unidentified submarine object) reports, but also it's inordinately high UFO activity led many experts to seriously consider that a "UFOport" existed either underwater or somewhere on land.

An event that occurred in July 1975 and reported by Guillermo Roncorconi a few years alter is a perfect example of this strange activity. In this instance it involved the Patagonian town of Caleta Olivia, which despite its small size is one of the major population centers of the region and serves as a support community for the Argentinean oil industry

On July 15, a group of friends on a fishing trip left Caleta Olivia to enjoy an evening's fishing, being rewarded by a spectacular catch. It was a clear, windless and cloudless evening presided by a waxing moon that cast its light onto the gulf's waters. The sportsmen returned to port after midnight, and around 1:30 in the morning, one of the friends noticed what appeared to be a glowing form underwater at a distance from the pier - all of the witnesses later agreed that the form was luminous, elongated and greenish-yellow in color, apparently only a few meters under the surface. They believed at first that object was motionless, but later saw that it was moving slowly under water. They estimated it to be some 10 meters long and 4 meters at its thickest, tapering toward the ends. The mysterious light kept moving without ever breaking the surface and eventually lost itself in the distance.

The sighting could have ended at that, had it not been for the enormous amount of dead fish that washed ashore the next morning and over the course of the following days. Even more enigmatic were the sudden deaths of seabirds - gulls and albatrosses - in the vicinity.

Blame was quickly placed on the oil pipeline belonging to Yacimientos Petroleos Fiscales (YPF), Argentina's major petroleum producer, but no oil spill was ever detected and subsequent investigations eliminated the possibility that the bird and fish deaths were somehow oil related. Commercial fishermen complained about having to go many miles out to sea for their daily catches, due to the near total absence of fish in coastal waters.

Was the slow-moving light reported by the four sportsmen who had just enjoyed a fine evening of fishing some kind of damaged or leaking unidentified submarine object, making its way back to its base in the depths of the ocean for repairs? The concept that a vehicle from another, more advanced civilization, whether alien, interdimensional or terrestrial, would leak radiation like a damaged nuclear submarine can be hard to swallow, but how else to account for the enigmatic deaths of not only fish, but seabirds?

CONCLUSION

Our planet Earth could have just as easily been called Water, and perhaps more fairly, as any satellite image of our world proves the prevalence of water over soil, or of the god Poseidon over Ceres, to wax mythological. From the shallow green of coastal waters where sailboats and motorboats play to the cobalt blue plowed by freighters, ocean liners and warships, humanity's fascination for the hydrosphere is as unending as it is irresistible.

Aside from the natural dangers that this liquid medium holds for air breathers, mariners and landlubbers alike have hinted at other perils that cannot be escaped in a lifeboat or by wearing a bright orange preserver. Myth? Rumor? Poorly explained natural phenomena? Enlightened minds would have us believe that there is nothing in the heavens or on earth that can escape the cold light of science, but the sea's mysteries are not so easily put aside...

Many thanks to Scott Corrales of Inexplicata - The Journal of Hispanic Ufology for posting his article from 2005. It's a fascinating narrative of ocean cryptids and legendary creatures.

Port Arthur Ghost Tour

Port Arthur Ghost Tour Image
If you live in Tasmania or visit Tasmania one place of interest you may want to visit is Port Arthur.

It is one of Australia's spookiest jail houses and towns, its history began back in colonising days (130 plus years ago) The jail there was built more so like a castle fort housing many convicts and criminals back from that time.

PORT ARTHUR GHOSTS

Now today the place is a tourist attraction and many still claim to see ghosts around the jail and in many places in the historic area.. I went there about four years ago and there is definitely an eerie mysterious energy around the place as you walk past solitary confinement areas and areas of the jail where many would of died.. In particular the execution area I remember had a dead chilling feeling..

HISTORY OF PORT ARTHUR

The HISTORY OF PORT ARTHUR, is it was an old port for timber dwellers and to house many criminals and convicts.. As time went on the town itself was abandoned in the mid to late 19th century.. It later sprung life again as investors and buyers claimed land and bought land there mainly due to its amazing beauty..

"TIME LINE OF PORT ARTHUR
Between 1803 and 1854 some 70,000 convicts, men and women, were transported to Tasmania, Australia. Those who committed serious offences in the settlements would be sent to Port Arthur chosen partly for its remoteness which made escape almost impossible.
"

PORT ARTHUR GHOST TOUR

Many rumours claim that many of the convicts were left to die after abandonment or cruel punishments were performed in the jail house and so that is the reason many ghosts abide by its location.. If you go there there are many Port Arthur Ghost Tours to see the old jail and settlement that now resembles in a lot of places an amazing decaying castle.. In the 1970s and early 1980s the historic site went under the management of the National Parks and Wildlife Service..

PORT ARTHUR GHOST WITNESS STORIES

These are some anonymous witness accounts for spending time in and around the Port Arthur in particular the Jail House Historic site.. Some of which came from construction workers repairing areas of the historic site and sleeping in the area, many more are available these are just some common ones that many claim are commonly seen..

* "Sight of a woman dressed in old clothing, and he felt the temperature drop in the room and saw the curtains flapping even when the window was firmly closed. "
* "Told of waking in the night, being attacked by someone who was pushing down on his chest and forcing the air out of his lungs. "
* "Hearing banging noises that could not be accounted for. "
* "Sightings of ghostly figures.."
* "Medical officer's residence Area in the Historic site many have reported hearing children's laughter, even today.."
* "Commandant's residence in the historic site - The ghost of Commandant Charles O'Hara Booth stands by the window of his bedroom, looking out over the settlement as he moans, paces and weeps"

"Another interesting fact about the prisoners sent to Port Arthur jail was a lot were said to be crasy already before going there (Insane), so that explains the deep emotional feelings of torment many feel there today.. Many mass graves can be seen there and some contain more than 180 people in the one grave.. "

As you can see some of these historic details contain many factors for creating emotional torment and holding many spirits to the area.. Whether all the stories or accounts are true I will leave that up to you to investigate further..?

Port Arthur truly is an amazing area and so is Tasmania, if you ever get a chance to go there make sure to visit THE GHOSTS OF PORT ARTHUR..

The Bardsley Road Ghost Legend

The Bardsley Road Ghost Legend Image
In the small farming community of Exeter, located in Tulare County, there is a rural road that has it's own ghost. The road is called Bardsley Road and supposedly the spirit of a headless motorcycle rider can be seen riding up and down it late at night.

Legend has it that sometime during the 1950's a motorcycle rider was killed on Bardsley Road. A few teenagers wanted to play a prank on one of their classmates. At night time they decided to string a rope across a road they knew he traveled on to get home, at what they estimated to be chest height. As he rode down the road, when he hit the rope he would be knocked off his bike. Or at least that was the plan. Unfortunately they misgauged the height of the rope. When the rider hit it, instead of it coming in contact with his chest, it hit him at the neck decapitating him and killing him instantly.

Apparently the rider never really left the road where he would always ride. Soon after his death, reports of seeing a bright lighting speeding up and down the road were common. Some even said they heard the sound of a motorcycle engine accompanying the light. And a few even said they saw the now headless rider on the road.

When I used to investigate haunted places around the Valley, this story had always peaked my interest and I had talked to a few people about it. One woman told me the story of how she and a few friends were having a bon fire party in one of the vineyards that lined the road. It was about 1:00 am when they saw a bright light coming down the road towards them. Thinking it was the sheriffs trying to break up their party, everyone took off running in separate directions. As the woman is running down one rows of vines, she sees the light following her. As it gets closer she can hear the roar of a motorcycle engine. Having heard of the story of the headless rider, now terrified she ducks under the vines and runs into another row as the ghost rides past her and then disappears.

No one knows why the spirit of the motorcycle rider continues to ride up and down the road. Perhaps he doesn't know he is dead and is trying to find his way home, like he did the night he was killed. Or perhaps he is looking for the people responsible for his death and will ride up and down it until he does.

Mystery Of The Ghost On Deervale Road Hill

Mystery Of The Ghost On Deervale Road Hill Image
This a personal experience of mine that happened to me and my family as a young kid. When i was younger (between 12 to 17), I was brought up in a country area near Dorrigo in north eastern Australia (NSW). The Place or area was called deervale. I was a beautiful scenic and forested area about 20klms west of dorrigo.

THE GHOST APPEARED NEAR THE END OF THE HOUSE BUILDING - 30 DEERVALE RD

As time progressed at Deervale my dad built a two story house for us to live in. Until then all we had was a large caravan on the block. When the house was nearly at completion, we noticed a weird occurrence. EVERY NIGHT AT AROUND 7.30PM A LIGHT (like a latern through the trees) from the hill opposite the house would appear through the forest and slowly descend the hill and and move to the right of the hill down the bottom before fading out.

We all started watching the show thinking that possibly it was a refraction of light or something. Even when daylight saving happened it would go appear at the same time, 8.30 or 7.30.. After a while we all started getting used to it and so at around 7.30 we would quickly have a look through our front window to mainly to show visitors.

TRYING DIFFERENT TESTS TO UNDERTAND THE LIGHT ON THE HILL

As time progressed further to over a year of this spectacle i tried a number of tests, going outside to different angles, yelling at the hill when the light was going down, etc.. Then one time something changed, as the light descended the hill i noticed how it flickered like a an old lantern through the forest, i picked up my courage to go closer to the forested hill and the light. When at the bottom of the hill i could not see the light no more, it was like i was too close and then i yelled out "hello".. I looked up at my friend back at the house which was about 100 yards back.. He nodded that he could see the light..

And then a loud "Bang". It sounded like a hard tree being smacked by an axe.. And then it stopped, but everything went quiet. That noise scared me then it sounded like a axe hitting a tree and then a tree falling I quickly went back to the house and left it at that

Many months went by and the conclusion I summed up for the hill and the light, was that it was a ghost doing the same routine day in, day out.. Sort of trapped on possibly there last experience in life.. "This is a theory of what I imagined happened which many agree with me
"

GHOST ON DEERVALE RD HILL

"I man or family used to live there back in the early 1900s when Deervale rd was first logged in the Dorrigo area, one day he went out late (around 7.30pm) with a latern to get some wood or maybe he was upset at something, hit a tree with his axe (a common tree cutting tool back then) and unfortunately the tree fell on him Since his death, his ghost possibly keeps doing the same thing over and over, like time does not exist. "

I remember how my sister lucie and our friends that knew about it, we called it the light"Has the light started..yet?" I still wonder about this place and the light today, even though the land is sold now, it is a mystery that started part of my wonder in life.. That was mystery of the ghost on Deervale road Hill

The Ghost Of Granny And Her Revenge

The Ghost Of Granny And Her Revenge Image
A bit of a ghost story today from Julia Roberts - no, not that "Julia Roberts" - but still a "'pretty woman'". I digress, so let's just get on with this ghostly tale from Julia.

"My grandmother was born and bred in the house where she lived all of her life in Cornwall. She was a friendly but firm old soul with a large family and therefore had lots of grand and great-grand children.

From the age of about seventy-five, until she died at the ripe old age of ninety-eight, she always sat in the same corner of her living room, from morning until night, gently rocking herself in her old, wooden rocking chair.

Eventually granny went to where all good grandmothers go, after they have had their fill of rocking and life in general.

As the house was now empty, my father, after much negotiation with the rest of the family, decided to move into granny's house. He soon set about modernising things but somehow couldn't get rid of the old rocking chair which remained in the corner of the living room.

Finally my mother flipped and said the chair had to go. It didn't fit in with the other, more modern furnishings. Dad agreed to chop up it up. Not sure why, as he could probably have sold the chair, but that was what he decided.

Mum and dad were in bed the following night and heard strange creaks and noises from the attic immediately above their bedroom. In the morning, when dad had gone to work, mum plucked up courage and went to investigate the attic.

As she looked inside there was the old rocking chair and, as she watched, it started to gently rock backwards and forwards. It sent a chill up mum's spine.

In the evening dad admitted that he hadn't been able to throw the chair away for sentimental reasons and had therefore stored it up in the attic.

Mum reluctantly relented and the rocking chair was placed temporarily back in the corner of the living room, it's rightful place.

A couple of weeks later mum moved the chair to another room. After doing so mum and dad found that the chair would start to rock when anyone entered the room. Dad said it was just a coincidence, or the wind from the door being opened, but mum felt it was granny's ghost at work. She didn't feel comfortable and the rocking, when entering the room, went on for days and days.

Dad was under pressure from mum to sort it out. In a moment of bravado, or madness, he took the chair into the garden and started to break it up into pieces. Mum and I were horrified when we saw what he was doing, we rushed outside, but it was too late to stop him.

Nothing immediately happened, until we returned to the house and the living room. There, lying on the floor, was the new fireplace which had been recently fitted. It had come right away from the wall and lay shattered. Dad said it was Granny's Revenge.

Nowadays, when all is quiet, there is still sometimes a creak to be heard from the floorboards, in the corner where granny used to gently rock her chair. It's a constant reminder never to mess with granny because her ghost is always watching."

Researchers Jim Morrison Ghost Picture Not Fake

Researchers Jim Morrison Ghost Picture Not Fake Image
In 1997, rock historian Brett Meisner visited late Doors frontman Jim Morrison's grave at Paris, France's Pere Lachaise cemetery. His assistant took a photo of him at the grave, and that was that.

But five years later, he looked at the photo and saw something kind of frightening: A very faint image in the background that looked like Morrison.

The image made its way onto the internet and is also discussed in a new book, Ghosts Caught On Film 2: Photographs Of The Unexplained.

The book says researchers can not account for the faint image in the background. They've decided it can't be a trick of the light, and have also ruled out the image being manipulated (Photoshop, etc.) in any way.

Maybe Morrison's "ghost" is to blame for all the vandalism on his grave that caused authorities to put a fence around his tombstone?

Or not.

At any rate, Meisner says the Morrison photo screwed up his life.

"Part of me wishes that I never stepped foot into the graveyard in the first place," he told the Daily Express.

"I'm partly to blame for talking about it in the first place. I should have kept it to myself.

"I've had strangers come to my home at all hours of the night wanting to talk to me saying they had messages from Jim.

"At first it was sort of interesting to see how many people felt a spiritual bond with Jim and the photo, but now the whole vibe seems negative."

In fact, Meisner literally wants to remove the negative from his life. He now says he plans to donate the photo and negative to an organization.
